Attic Spray Foam Insulation FAQs

  • Spray foam insulation expands up to 100 times its original size to fill every crack and corner of your home for superior thermal insulation and air sealing compared to fibreglass, which cannot fill all the spaces and gaps, which results in enough air leakage every day.

Spray foam insulation lasts the lifetime of your home and comes with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty, whereas fibreglass needs an upgrade every 5 – 10 years.

Spray foam’s air sealing qualities help reduce the amount of dust, allergens and pollutants entering your home, in comparison to fibreglass, which allows allergens and pollutants to enter your home. These can trigger allergies as well as respiratory issues.

Spray foam insulation contains no harmful chemicals, whereas most fibreglass contains formaldehyde and may emit formaldehyde fumes into your home.

  • Absolutely not! Our open-cell foam is breathable, when applied to any surface it allows any moisture present to dry out through evaporation, this is important as timber and masonry surfaces need to breathe to ensure that no damp or rot problems are caused. Whereas a lot of the horror stories come from polyurethane closed cell foam, which is more suitable when moisture breathe-ability is not a requirement, such as on metal. However, if your timbers are already damp or have some form of rot or woodworm, they should be treated and dried first.

Spray foam insulation does not have food or organic value; therefore, it isn’t a suitable environment for pests and bacteria. Open cell is a superior insulation system against mould, with an excellent protection factor compared to fibreglass and cellulose. Rodents and pests will stay away from it as well.

  • Open cell spray foam insulation is a soft, breathable low density (Approximately 100mm thick) insulation prominently used when timber is involved and allows timbers to breathe, ideal for lofts, underfloors, walls, crawlspaces, and commercial however, it can also be used on non-breathable surfaces such as metal.

Whereas closed-cell spray foam insulation is a rigid medium density (Approximately 50mm thick) insulation ideal for continuous insulation solutions and prominently used for metal, ships, containers, marines, shipping containers, industrial, and basements; however, it can also be used in properties as it adds wall racking strength, and structural integrity to the building.

  • The foam expands 100 times in 4-12 seconds after being applied. With proper ventilation, you can use the room 24 hours or less after installation. As it is a water-blown product, there will be no unusual smells remaining after installation. The majority of homeowners’ installs can be completed within a day, however, bigger projects such as commercial installs can take longer. Our insulation surveyor can give you an accurate representation of what time scales you can expect.

  • Mould requires three things to grow: moisture, warm temperatures and a food source. Polyurethane foam insulation has no nutritional value and is not considered a food source for mould. The use of polyurethane as insulation eliminates surface condensation and reduces the potential to accumulate moisture. It also eliminates air movement within the wall cavity. Other insulations are less successful at controlling air infiltration and providing adequate insulation to eliminate surface condensation, thus increasing the possibility of an environment susceptible to mould.

  • Yes, open-cell spray foam has been independently tested for airtightness and performed exceptionally well as an air barrier with figures as low as 0.028m³/hr.m²
